Catalunya, Spain: Food, Wine & the Mediterranean Landscape
November 7 - 15, 2026
November 7 - 15, 2026
This 8-night journey explores several distinct corners of Catalunya: Barcelona, Montseny Natural Park, Pla de Bages, Altafulla, Tarragona, Priorat, and Montsant. The itinerary is designed for travelers who are genuinely curious about food, wine, and the cultures that produce them. While we'll visit historic cities, coastal towns, and beautiful landscapes, the primary focus of the trip is understanding Catalonia through its agricultural traditions, culinary heritage, and wine culture.
Catalunya has a strong regional identity shaped by its own language, history, and geography. While Barcelona is one of Europe's most visited cities, much of the trip focuses on smaller towns and rural landscapes where Catalan culture remains especially visible in everyday life. We'll stay in a 13th-century masia farmhouse in Montseny Natural Park, spend time in the Pla de Bages wine region, base ourselves in the coastal town of Altafulla near Tarragona, and finish in Priorat, one of Spain's most respected wine regions.
Food in Catalunya reflects the varied landscapes of the region. Mountain forests, agricultural plains, vineyards, olive groves, and the Mediterranean coast all contribute to a cuisine rooted in local products and seasonal rhythms. During our stay in Montseny, we'll cook with ingredients grown and raised nearby, share meals prepared using traditional methods, forage for wild mushrooms and edible plants, visit a family farm and butchery, and harvest olives while learning about the production of both table olives and olive oil. Throughout the trip, meals provide an opportunity to understand how ingredients move from landscape to table.
Wine will be a constant presence throughout the journey. We'll explore several of Catalunya's wine regions, from the emerging wines of Pla de Bages—including native varieties such as picapoll—to the steep slate vineyards of Priorat and Montsant, known for powerful, age-worthy reds with the native garnatxa and carinyena grapes. Along the way, we'll taste sparkling wines made from xarello, macabeu, and parellada, as well as a range of whites and reds that reflect the diversity of Catalan viticulture. Visits range from small family-run wineries to leading biodynamic estates, accompanied by long lunches, conversations with growers, and generous tastings.
Rather than focusing on a checklist of sights, this itinerary features food, wine, agriculture, and local traditions as a way to better understand the landscapes and culture of Catalunya. Space is limited to just 8-12 travelers, so click below to find out how to sign up.
Arrive in Barcelona at any time today. Travelers departing from the United States will depart the evening before, though you are also welcome to arrive a day or two early to spend additional time exploring the city. Additional hotel nights can be arranged.
After checking in and settling into Barcelona, the day is yours to rest, adjust to the time change, or take a walk through one of Europe's most vibrant cities. In the evening, we'll gather for the first time over drinks, wine, and tapas. This welcome dinner provides an opportunity to get to know your fellow travelers, discuss the week ahead, and begin our introduction to Catalan food, wine, and culture.

Today is an open day in Barcelona, giving you the opportunity to explore the city according to your own interests. If this is your first visit, you may wish to spend time with some of Barcelona's best-known landmarks, including the Sagrada Família, the Gothic Quarter, or the many examples of Antoni Gaudí's architecture found throughout the city. Others may prefer to visit museums, wander through local markets, or simply spend the day exploring different neighborhoods on foot.
For those interested in food and wine, Barcelona offers plenty of opportunities to dig deeper through a market visit, a cooking class, a guided food tour, or an afternoon spent exploring the city's wine, vermut, and tapas bars. You might also choose to walk or cycle along the Mediterranean waterfront, browse boutique shops and cafés, or spend a few hours observing daily life.
We'll be happy to provide recommendations and make arrangements based on your interests. The following morning we'll leave the city behind and head into Montseny Natural Park, where the focus shifts toward the agricultural traditions, food culture, and rural landscapes that have shaped Catalonia for centuries.

This morning we'll leave Barcelona behind and head into the Catalan countryside. Our first stop is the agricultural village of Gallecs, where we'll meet local farmers and gather seasonal ingredients that will be used throughout our stay at the farmhouse. We'll also enjoy a traditional Catalan farmer's breakfast in the open air, featuring local products and simple dishes that reflect the rhythms of rural life.
From Gallecs, we'll travel to and stay at a 13th-century restored farmhouse (masia) nestled within Montseny Natural Park near the village of Figaró. This historic farmhouse will be our home for the next two nights and the setting for a hands-on exploration of traditional Catalan cooking.
After settling in, we'll head into the surrounding forests with a local guide to forage for wild mushrooms and other edible plants, herbs, and seasonal ingredients that have long been part of the region's culinary traditions. The landscapes of Montseny have sustained local communities for centuries, and the foraging experience offers an opportunity to understand the close relationship between food, seasonality, and place.
Back at the farmhouse, we'll begin preparing a variety of dishes using the ingredients gathered throughout the day. Dinner is a collaborative cooking experience, and later in the evening we'll prepare meats and vegetables for an overnight roast in the masia's original wood-fired oven. Much of the evening centers around the kitchen, where cooking, eating, and conversation unfold much as they would have for the families who lived here generations ago.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The day begins with a traditional Catalan farmhouse breakfast of cured meats, local cheeses, fresh eggs, bread, and seasonal fruit. The morning offers an opportunity to slow down and settle into the rhythms of life at the masia, with time to explore the surrounding landscape or just relax at the farmhouse.
Lunch is one of the highlights of the stay. We'll gather around the table to enjoy the dishes that have been cooking slowly overnight in the wood-fired oven, typically including lamb, pork, or chicken alongside seasonal vegetables and aromatics. The meal reflects a style of cooking that has long been central to rural Catalan life: simple ingredients, patience, and a strong connection to the land.
The afternoon is intentionally unhurried. There will be time to rest, enjoy the natural surroundings of Montseny, or participate in additional food preparation as we begin work on the evening meal. Dinner, once again, is a hands-on experience centered around the farmhouse kitchen.

After departing Montseny, we'll continue to Pla de Bages, a historic agricultural region where farming, livestock, olive cultivation, and winemaking have long existed side by side.
Our day begins with a farm visit and butchery workshop, offering a closer look at traditional methods of raising animals and producing fresh charcuterie, such as butifarra and chorizo. We'll learn about techniques that have shaped Catalan food culture for generations and gain a deeper understanding of how these products move from farm to table. The experience concludes with a lunch hosted at the farm.
In the afternoon, we'll visit a local olive oil producer for an introduction to one of the Mediterranean's most important agricultural traditions. We'll harvest ripe olives directly from the trees and learn how olives are transformed into both table olives and high-quality extra virgin olive oil. As part of the experience, each traveler will prepare their own jar of olives, beginning the curing process using traditional methods before taking them home to continue curing and enjoy in the months ahead. The visit also includes an olive oil tasting accompanied by local snacks, offering an opportunity to explore the flavors, aromas, and characteristics of oils produced from the surrounding groves.
Later in the day, we'll continue to the coastal town of Altafulla, our base for the next two nights. Located just outside Tarragona, Altafulla offers a slower pace than nearby Barcelona, with a historic village center, easy access to the Mediterranean, and a strong connection to the region's culinary traditions.

Today we'll explore Tarragona, one of the most historically significant cities in Catalunya and the former Roman capital of Hispania Tarraconensis. During a guided walk through the old city, we'll examine the layers of history that continue to shape Tarragona today, from its Roman amphitheater and ancient walls to its medieval streets and lively public squares.
We'll pause for a relaxed Mediterranean lunch, with time to enjoy the city's atmosphere before returning to the coast.
In the evening, we'll gather for a short walk through Altafulla's historic center, a beautifully preserved village of stone buildings, narrow streets, and small plazas overlooking the sea. Dinner follows at one of our favorite Slow Food restaurants, where the menu highlights seasonal ingredients and the products of the surrounding region.

Today we'll travel into Priorat, one of Spain's most distinctive wine regions. Defined by steep hillsides, terraced vineyards, and its characteristic llicorella slate soils, Priorat is a landscape where grape growing remains demanding and deeply tied to the terrain.
Our first visit is with a small family-run estate producing wine, olive oil, and traditional Priorat dessert wines. We'll spend time with the owner and winemaker, learning about the challenges and opportunities of farming in this rugged environment before sharing a homemade lunch at the winery.
In the afternoon, we'll visit one of Priorat's leading biodynamic winemakers for a more in-depth exploration of the region's contemporary viniculture. Through a guided tasting, we'll examine how terroir, farming practices, and grape variety influence the wines, while also gaining a broader understanding of why Priorat has become one of the most respected wine regions not just in Spain but worldwide.
This evening we'll stay in a historic boutique hotel in the heart of Priorat, offering the opportunity to experience the region after the day visitors have departed and the villages settle into their quieter evening rhythm.

Our final full day focuses on the neighboring wine region of Montsant. The morning is spent at a biodynamic winery in Montsant, where we'll explore the connection between local flora, vineyard ecosystems, and the aromas and flavors found in wine. A guided walk through the vineyards is followed by a winery lunch paired with a selection of estate wines, providing an opportunity to discuss how farming practices, climate, and geography influence what ultimately ends up in the glass.
After lunch, we'll we'll return to Barcelona for our final evening and a farewell dinner at a very special restaurant which will feature modern Catalan cuisine.
